Lionel Messi equals Raul's Champions League graphic
The Barcelona superstar has beaten his Real Madrid counterpart to equal Raul's Champions League record of 71 goals - Telegraph Sport looks at how quickly he's done it
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have long rivalled each other for the tag of "best player in the world". While that term is subjective, the matter of who scores more goals is unequivocal.
Both players have amazing records in front of goal and this season's Champions League has brought added spice with the duo racing to break Raul's European scoring tally.
Former Real Madrid star Raul notched up 71 goals in 142 games, but the two current stars of world football have been hot on his heels.
Ronaldo, who failed to score for the first time in 12 matches against Liverpool at the Bernabeu, has 70 in 106 games.
But Messi has equalled Raul's total, his brace against Ajax taking his tally to 71 goals from 90 Champions League games.
